What Is The Secret?

City Secret will be an urban agriculture project focused on getting youth interested and involved in gardening, agriculture, and growing their own food. Based in an urban setting in downtown Asheville, North Carolina, the project will bring in high school students from the area and provide them the resources to start their own gardens, go on to intern at farms or other organizations, and even pursue careers in agriculture. We  will provide the students with their own plot to grow what they choose, as well as the expertise and resources they need to do this.  From these experiences the students will be gaining valuable education and work skills, an opportunity to become connected with the local farmers and organizations, the skills needed to go further in the field of agriculture, and of course delicious and nourishing food from the garden!

The students will also work together on each step of the process in a communal gardening area. This will be done to gain a more holistic sense of the processes behind the work involved.  Each student will also attend workshops that are open to everyone.  These are intended to give them a solid foundation of skills to build upon when doing work each week in the garden. These workshops would be led by local experts in the field of large and small scale organic farming, permaculture, gardening techniques, urban gardening, food systems, and so on.
